🛡️ Travel insurance made simple: what you need, what your cards may cover, and how to avoid gaps

Medical, cancellation, rental car. No gaps

1) Medical and evacuation

Must-have for international trips. Covers doctor visits, hospital care, and emergency evacuation. Check limits, pre-existing condition rules, and any sport exclusions.

2) Trip cancellation and interruption

Protects prepaid, non-refundable costs if a covered reason stops the trip. Read the list of covered reasons. Cancel For Any Reason is extra and more limited.

3) Trip delay and baggage

Daily allowance for hotels and meals if you are stuck. Coverage for lost or delayed bags and business equipment.

4) Rental car coverage

Collision damage waiver for the vehicle. This is not liability. Liability is separate and often not covered by cards.

Card perks you may already have

Many premium cards include travel protections when you pay with the card. Examples to review: Amex Platinum and Gold, Chase Sapphire Reserve or Preferred, Capital One Venture X. Benefits can include trip delay, trip cancellation and interruption, baggage, and rental car collision damage coverage. Terms vary by card and by country. Some cards offer primary rental car coverage, others are secondary, and some cards require enrollment for enhanced benefits. Always read your card’s Benefits Guide and pay with the card that gives the best protection.

Five-minute setup checklist

  • International trip planned

Get medical plus evacuation. Save the 24/7 assist phone number in the booking.

  • Large non-refundable spend

Add trip cancellation and interruption. Confirm the covered reasons match your scenario.

  • Renting a car

Confirm if your card gives primary CDW in your destination. If not, buy primary at checkout.

  • Pay the right way

Use the card with the strongest protections for that trip.

  • Store everything

Keep policy numbers and claim steps in the trip. Save receipts during delays.
